I won't comment on American political discourse, but the best way to achieve equality in is to bring the bottom up (by promoting motivation and getting better instructors in schools), not moving the goalpost (plus calculus is very much a prerequisite in those "alternative" courses).

It is right to reject "gifted children" as a concept, because everyone can succeed, given the right tools and, more importantly, a work-hard mindset. Every student matters!
